Are there differences between males and females in terms of what they think love is or in how they experience love?

As of 2/24/96, the differences between males and females is pretty small in terms of how they scored on the Passion and Commitment Scales on the Concept version of the Love Test. However females (89.7%) scored significantly higher on the Concept of Emotional Intimacy scale than did males (87.2%) (t (609) = 3.6, p less than .001). Note that the average difference between males and females on what they think Emotional Intimacy should be is about 2.5 points.

Females think there should more Liking, Honesty, Caring, Respect, Trust, Friendship, Feeling good about self, Sharing, Kindness, Feeling Important, Compassion, Wanting the best for each other, Closeness, Confidence that our feelings are Mutual, Comforting each other, Giving, and Contentment than do males (p less than .05). These differences ranged from .1 to .3 of a point on average. The scale for the individual Love Test items ranges from 0 (none) to 6 (A Lot!).

Males and females did not differ in their scores on Happiness, Intimacy, Openness, Supportiveness, Understanding, Being able to talk about anything, Forgiveness, Patience, Feeling Relaxed, Interest in each other, Responsibility, Helping, Concern for each other's well being, Affection, Accepting each other "as is", and Empathy.

Note that the average difference between males and females on their experience of Emotional Intimacy is about 3.5 points.
