The Love Test       Love Test Findings
Methodology

Scale Development
The scale consists of 68 items (features of love) derived from Fehr (1988). Two versions of question stems were developed for the items with the goal of tapping how important each feature of love is to one's concept or experience of love.

The stem and response options for the concept version are:

"How important is ITEM(i) in your view of love?"
Not Important Very Important!

The stem and response options for the experience version are:

In my relationship, I experience ITEM(i).
None! A Lot!

Participants are required to answer 95% of the items or the server will not return the next section of the Love Test.

Administration
Instructions are presented that include rationnale for the test, and instructions on completing the test. Potential Love Test Takers are informed that no information that could be used to identify them will be stored. Each person has three options for taking The Love Test. They can take

If the person chose to take either the concept version or the experience version they receive the demographics section. After the demographics section is completed, they submit that form and then the server sends them the version of the Love Test that they chose to take (concept or experience). When they complete the love test, they submit that form and the server scores and returns their results page.

If the person chose to take both versions of the Love Test they receive the demographics section. After the demographics section is completed, they submit that form and the server sends them the concept version of the Love Test. When they complete the concept version of the Love Test, they submit that form and the server returns a copy of the experience version of The Love Test. After they complete the experience section, they submit it to the server which scores and returns their results page.

People who choose to take only the concept version, receive a short version of demographic questions that are included as a part of the experience version. The demographics questions are presented in the same order for each person taking The Love Test. Answers to certain items on the demographics questionnaire are required or the server will not send the test taker the next section of the test.

To control for order effects, The Love Test items within each version are randomly sequenced in each questionnaire that is administered.

Scoring
Responses to The Love Test items are scored based on which radio button was checked on a scale from 0 to 6. The passion, emotional intimacy and commitment subscales are based on averaged factor loadings from two studies by Aron and Westlake (personal communication). To be included in a subscale, the love feature had to have an average loading of .3 or above on a factor. Since several of the items load above .3 on more than one factor, items may be included in more than one subscale score (although each item appears only once when The Love Test is administered). Score on the items are summed to create the raw subscale scores. Each subscale score is then transformed into a percent of possible based on the number of items completed on that subscale.
