Oklahoma, 1989
This sample was obtained from a midsized university in central
Oklahoma. Cluster sampling was used to select three classes using
the university class schedule as the sampling frame. 88 subjects
completed the study. Ten subjects were removed from the analyses
to restrict the sample to native born Americans. The final sample
consisted of 48 females and 30 males ranging in age from 18 to
69 years of age (mean = 29.7 years). Seventy one percent were
not married and 87% were Caucasian. Twenty three percent of the
sample were freshman and sophomores, 61% were Juniors and Seniors,
and 16% were graduate students.
The Oklahoma sample reported from 0 to 7 different sexual partners in the last year (mean = 1.45, sd = 1.36). The majority of the Oklahoma sample reported having 0 (21.4%) or 1 (62.5%) sexual partners in the last year. Only a minority (16%) reported having more than one sexual partner in the last year.
Texas, 1991
This sample was obtained from a large southern Texas university.
Participants were volunteers from the psychology department subject
pool who signed up for a study called "Relationships".
There were 173 males and 191 females who ranged from 17 to 25
years of age (mean = 18.8 years). 66% of respondents were freshmen,
22% were sophomores, 10% were juniors, and 2% were seniors. 99%
of the sample were unmarried and 92% were Caucasian.
The Texas sample reported having 0 to 20 different sexual partners in the last year (mean = 1.53, sd = 2.17). The majority of the Texas sample reported having 0 (36%) or 1 (31%) sexual partners in the last year. However 33% of the Texas sample reported having more than one sexual partner in the last year.
The Texas sample reported from 0 to 15 one night stands in the last year (mean = 1.13, sd = 1.93). The majority of the Texas sample reported having 0 (59%) or 1 (27%) one night stands in the last year. However 24% of the Texas sample reported having two or more one night stands in the last year.
