What is off limits for discussion?
As long as the post conforms to the underlying principles of

  1. Do no harm, and
  2. If it's consentual, it's ok
it is fair game for discussion. Remember... We have people from many cultures here who do not all share the same beliefs about what is acceptible sexually, so don't assume that everyone shares your beliefs. It's *not* ok to impose your beliefs on others or to present your beliefs as some universal truth.

What's off-limits on Sex-L:

See the Communication section and the Net Relationships section of our Love and Relationships page for more info on communicating. Also, see the Sex-L Discussion Group List Norms.

How to send a message to everyone subscribed to the list

You send mail to the list address and that mail is forwarded automatically to the list editors who will release your mail to the list if it's consistant with list guidelines. If the list editor deems that your message is not consistant with the list guidelines, they will provide their rationnale and either reject your message or ask you to edit and resubmit your message. After you have demonstrated that you can keep your posts consistant with list guidelines the editor will set your options to where you will be able to send mail directly to the list. It is the member's responsibility to help keep Sex-L a cool place to be. If you consistently violate the list norms (contribute to flaming, etc), you will no longer be allowed to participate in the discussions.

If you want to send a message to everyone who is subscribed to Sex-L send mail to: Sex-L@listserv.tamu.edu

Make sure that the subject line reflects the content of your message.

You must be a member to send mail to the list.

Remember to:

Note that if you see a message from the list that you would like to reply to, the reply function in your e-mail software will by default send your reply only to the originator of the message, not to the everyone who is a member. We chose to set it up this way to make people have to decide whether the message should go to the original sender of the message or to the entire group.

Send mail to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.TAMU.EDU

In the body of the mail message type only the command:
SET SEX-L CONCEAL

Type SET SEX-L CONCEAL in the subject line.

The LISTSERV will send you mail telling you if your command worked.

Note that the conceal option keeps people from being able to find your address/name if they send a review Sex-L command to the LISTSERV to get the subscriber's list. It does not keep your name from showing up in the message header when you send a message to the discussion list. If you don't want your real name to appear on your posts to the list, you'll need to use the subscribe command to change the name that you're subscribed under and I think you will need to check your e-mail software settings and change it there as well.

How YOU can help keep Sex-L a cool place to be

Understand what is expected here and behave accordingly. Treat others as you would like to be treated--with civility, tolerance and respect.

There will be newbies showing up here all the time. Some aren't familiar with listserv discussion groups. They may do things that are annoying like posting multiple one liners, quoting entire posts, etc. When you see the beginnings of this send *private* e-mail to *them* as soon as possible after you notice what's going on. Explain what the problem is and include a copy of the norms file... treat them like you would like to be treated if you had done something clueless and didn't know it.

How come I'm not getting mail from the list?

How come I'm suddenly getting the list in digest format?

If your mailbox gets full (or if your account is for other reasons not able to receive mail), we get an error message for every post that can't be delivered to your account. So when mail starts bouncing from your account, you will either be set to digest format or removed from the list (we have the listserv set up to automatically unsubscribe you at 50 bounced messages or having mail bounces for 2 consecutive days). Also, to cut down on the number of error messages we have to deal with, every month the listserv sends out a message asking you to confirm that you want to stay subscribed. If you fail to reply to that message, the LISTSERV will automatically remove you from the list and you'll need to subscribe again.

To check and see if you are still subscribed, send mail to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.TAMU.EDU

In the body of the mail message type only the command:
QUERY SEX-L

Type QUERY SEX-L in the subject line.

and the LISTSERV will send you e-mail. This e-mail with either tell you that you are not subscribed to the list, or it will list your current settings for the list. If you are not subscribed, you will need to join the list again. If you are subscribed, but set to digest or nomail mode, then you will need to tell the LISTSERV to start sending individual messages again. See How to find previous posts to Sex-L if you need to catch up on the posts you missed.

How come I'm getting an error message that says that my mail couldn't be delivered to someone and what does that mean

When you send a message to Sex-L@listserv.tamu.edu it goes from you to the listserv and is distributed to everyone who us subscribed to the list. If a subscriber's mailbox is full or if there are other problems that keep mail from being delivered to that person, the listserv sends the originator of the message an e-mail to let them know that the message did not get delivered to that person and why (those error messages are generally difficult to figure out, however if you look about 3 screens down in the message it gives you the username@nodename.host for the person and the reason it couldn't be delivered). Note that if you did receive a copy of your message back from the listserv, it did make it to everyone who is subscribed except for those people who's account generated the error message. Just consider it a minor inconvenience and delete the error message.
